Research seminar on Democracy and the Armed Forces

On December 3, 2021, the Center for Democracy and Armed Forces (NEDEFA) at PUC-Rio held the Research Seminar on Democracy and Armed Forces (Seminário de Pesquisa em Democracia e Forças Armadas, in Portuguese). Held virtually, the event brought together graduate researchers linked to PUC-Rio’s research departments and projects, who presented their ongoing research.


The event consisted of four transdisciplinary roundtables.

Panel 1, “Military, memory and justice”, was chaired by Carolina de Campos Melo (Department of Law/PUC-Rio) and had Fernanda Pradal (Department of Law/PUC-Rio) and Angela Moreira Domingues da Silva (CPDOC FGV) as discussants. The researchers Kristina Hinz, Maria Carolina Soares, Rafael Oliveira Alves and Tatiana dos Santos Araújo presented their work.

Panel 2, “Authoritarianism, democratization and resistance” , was chaired by Maurício Parada (Department of History/PUC-Rio) and had Mario Miranda (Department of History/PUC-Rio) and Monica Herz (Institute of International Relations/ PUC-Rio) as discussants. The researchers Julia de Paula França, Maria Alice Albuquerque, Paula Ramalho Atanes and Rodrigo Lauriano Soares presented their work.

Panel 3, “Militarism: violence and violations”, was chaired by Kai Michael Kenkel (Institute of International Relations/PUC-Rio) and discussed by Anaís Passos (UFSC) and Eduardo Svartman (UFRGS). The researchers Caio dos Santos Araújo, Gabriela de Assumpção Nogueira, Juliana Sousa Mochel and Victoria Motta presented their work.

Finally, Panel 4, “Militarism: expressions and trends”, was chaired by Maíra Siman (Institute of International Relations/PUC-Rio) and discussed by Adriana Marques (UFRJ) and Adriana Barreto (UFRRJ). The researchers Fernando Pinheiro da Silva, Tatiane Moura Amaral and Victória Santos presented their work.
